Change Yourself…Change The World.

Cairo, Part Two

Dear friends,

Rather than telling you about my day in long, languid detail, I decided to showcase my second day in Cairo, in picture form. There are a few reasons for this.

A) I’m exhausted! It’s hard to balance EXPERIENCING and then immediately telling stories/uploading pictures at the same time!
B) Sometimes I get self-conscious about the super long blog posts, followed by lots of pictures. Do readers find this too lengthy? I try to be a people pleaser, so I’m changing things up a bit.
C) As everyone says, a picture is worth 1,000 words.

So without further ado:

The Islamic Cairo district of Cairo.

Arabic perfumes.

Soon to be cooked (sorry vegetarians/vegans).

A back alley market that sells fruits and vegetables.

Egyptian Pancakes- I know this actually looks like a pizza, but they call it pancakes. This is one of the BEST things I have ever had. I couldn’t get enough of it. Complete hole in the wall in Islamic Cairo, near Al-Azhar mosque (called ‘Egyptian pancakes’). If you can find it, ORDER ONE.

Me utterly failing in attempting to take a picture of Tara and Petra about to consume our Egyptian pancake.

Absolutely sumptuous.

Back out to wandering around back alleyways of Islamic Cairo.

I don’t know what these are, but there is an entire street with at least a hundred shops dedicated to all shapes, colors, and sizes of these things.

After a lot of aimless wandering, we ended up right back in Khal el-Khalili, the huge Egyptian market. Strawberry juice was on the menu at El Fishawy, a cafe off of the main bazaar.

Cafe Fishawy. This waiter was really excited to be in the picture.

Trying to cross this street is like playing chicken for restaurants. At least 10 men will approach you, trying to shove menus into your hands and urging you to sit down at their local haunt.

You know this is a touristy area where every few feet are big ‘Tourism Police’ booths.

…..Travel Gem! What are you doing in Cairo, Whole Foods?

The traffic in Cairo.

Genius. We went into Al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo, but were not wearing the correct clothes, so we were offered these tasteful gowns to cover ourselves. Please note our expressions. This is serious business, folks.

This is me

Tara and Petra

On to Bab Zuweila, another mosque in Islamic Cairo. We were vaguely looking for this during the day and passed by it in the early afternoon with no idea what it was- then we had to hightail it back over there before it closed.

Definitely worth it making it over there. An amazing view of the entire city!

Petra and I brave one of Bab Zuweila’s minarets.

My camera definitely does not do justice for how dark it was.

Our reward.

Bab Zuweila and Cairo.

Amazing. THIS is Cairo.

Climbing all the way to the top.

Petra at the top of Bab Zuweila

Islamic Cairo is gorgeous.

On our way out of Islamic Cairo.
